Inside's graphic design employs monochromatic backdrops and irregular bursts of color to create a really unpleasant experience, and this gloomy, narrative-driven platformer is a horrifyingly unnerving trip.

#8. LITTLE NIGHTMARES

Although Little Nightmares is in its second installment, the first game in the series is still worth picking up - it not only lays the stage for a final encounter with The Thin Man in the sequel, but it is maybe even more horrifying. You play as Six, a tiny boy attempting to leave the horrors of the isolated vessel, a place steeped in mystery and malevolence.

The terrible Twin Chefs are chasing you with sharp butcher knives, and The Janitor's long arms are wrapping through the air vents behind you as you try to run. Little Nightmares is a short game, but it manages to ramp up the suspense in a dismal, horrific backdrop while crafting a terrifying story and bringing us on a ghastly journey that ends in an epic ending.

It's a spooky thriller that alternates between a paranormal horror and a calm adventure game to create a tense, unsettling mood that lasts all the way until the dramatic conclusion. Oxenfree manages to transform the genre into something magnificent, gorgeous, and horrifying.

#10. DOOM 3

Doom 3 is almost as old to us now as the original Doom was when it was released, but like with many of the finest horror games, what counts is how terrifying it is, and Doom 3 is still scary as balls.

The emphasis here is on a quickly expanding arsenal of weaponry with which to murder an army of hell demons, upside-down baby-face spiders, and strange alien bears. The id Tech 4 engine was a technological wonder of its day, giving an incomprehensible degree of detail to what had previously been a slew of flat brown sprites.
