The earliest Japanese animation is reported to have been created and released in 1917. When it comes to the most well-known anime in Japan, Astor Boy (a.k.a. Mighty Atom) was released in 1963 as the first series to show on television. Every year, hundreds of new anime are shown on TV, distributed to movie streaming services, and released to theaters, and the number of must-see titles continues to grow. Of course, there are many others worth seeing that aren't on this list.

1. Tokyo Revengers

Tokyo Revengers is a popular recent anime series that is based on the current manga series that has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine since 2017. The first season of the anime adaptation, consisting of 24 episodes, was widely received by manga and anime fans. Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old unsuccessful man, suddenly travels back in time 12 years. He attempts to change the past as a Yanki junior high schooler in order to save his ex-girlfriend, who dies in an accident in the present.

2. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop, which is currently one of the most popular Japanese anime among foreigners, premiered in Japan for 26 episodes between 1998 and 1999. Cowboy Bebop takes place in 2071, as bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and his companion Jet Black pursue criminals. Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door, an anime film, was released in 2001.

3. My Hero Academia 

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular continuing anime series, with the original manga published on Weekly Shōnen Jump since 2014. Izuku Midoriya, a young kid, and other Heroes use their abilities Quirks to combat the Villains. My Hero Academia is especially famous among overseas anime viewers, since the anime's tone and feel are more akin to an American Superhero comic than a Japanese anime.

4. Tokyo Ghoul 

Tokyo Ghoul, a popular dark fantasy manga published on Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2014, was turned into an anime in 2014. In 2018, the sequel, Tokyo Ghoul're, premiered as the second half of the anime. The anime centers on the concept of Ghouls, who dwell in human society and appear normal. The ghouls, on the other hand, eat human flesh.

5. Attack on Titan 

Attack on Titan should be included as one of the top action anime in recent years. It was first published as a manga in 2009, and the first season of the anime adaptation premiered in 2013. In the narrative, mankind is on the verge of destruction due to an onslaught by titans. The primary protagonists, Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman, together with the other members of the Survey Corps, fight against the titans.

The manga series ended in April 2021, while season 4 (the last season) of the anime series began in the winter of 2020.

6. Ghost in the Shell

The iconic cyberpunk anime series Ghost in the Shell debuted in 1995 as an anime film directed by Mamoru Oshii, followed by the first season of the TV anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex ( STAND ALONE COMPLEX) directed by Kenji Kamiyama.

The location of the anime is Japan in the parallel universe after 2030 where the science technology is significantly evolved. In this anime, Public Security Section 9, led by Major Motoko Kusanagi, strives to prevent crimes. In 2020, the new title of the series Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045 ( SAC 2045) with complete 3DCG was published with 12 episodes exclusively on Netflix worldwide.

7. Death Note

The mystery and horror anime Dearth Note (), based on the manga released in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2006, has received great praise from both local and foreign anime audiences. It is so famous throughout the world in part because the anime has a relatively short tale (37 episodes) as well as a well-developed storyline. Naruto, the best anime with a Ninja theme, was first published as a Weekly Shonen Jump manga by Masashi Kishimoto in 1999 and ran until 2014.
