The Palmyra palm tree, also called Borassus flabellifer, yields palmyra fruits. These fruits, sometimes known as “palmyra nuts” or “toddy palm fruits,” have a translucent, delicious content inside a hard outer shell. Additionally, palm sugar and the traditional alcoholic beverage known as toddy are made from the sap of the tree.
The fruit, known as palmyra fruit, is borne in clusters and ranges in diameter from 10 cm (3.9 in) to 18 cm (7.1 in). It also contains a black husk. The fruit’s top must be removed to reveal the transparent, pale-white, sweet jelly seed sockets, which resemble lychee pits but have a softer flavour. Within the fruit are combinations of two, three, or four sweet jelly seed sockets. There is a thin, brownish-yellow skin covering the jelly portion of the fruit. The fleshy white body of these is known to carry a watery fluid.
They are a good source of minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins. They are full of iron, potassium, zinc, fibre, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, and carbs. They also supply natural sugars and can form a nutritious component of a diet that is well-balanced.
