The term "non-toxic" can be difficult to grasp when it comes to beauty products. It is also unregulated by any government agency, such as the Food and Drug Administration. Today, many items use the word "toxic-free" to signify that they were made "without the use of potentially hazardous, carcinogenic, or poisonous chemicals whose safety may be questioned." The Toxics-Free Foundation supports this word, which is not regulated by the federal government.

We tend to disregard the components or harmfulness of some of our favourite and most used beauty products, even with these unregulated labels, to our peril. So, here are ten of the most harmful beauty products that we still use daily.

1. Mercury-containing skin creams

In nature, mercury is a common metal. When it is discharged into the environment, however, it is usually detrimental. More than 60 poisonings have been attributed to unlabeled or unknown DIY skin creams that contained dangerous mercury, commonly identified as mercuric chloride, calomel, or others, in California over the last ten years. Avoid homemade or off-label creams, as well as any branded containers that are not sealed when purchased. Containers that have not been sealed may have been tampered with and may contain mercury or other pollutants. These lotions are used to treat blemishes, freckles, blemishes, age spots, skin irritation, and acne. Local stores, flea markets, individuals, and the internet are all common places to find these creams.

Many of these items are manufactured and imported from countries other than the United States. In earlier poisonings involving imported skin creams, some children and babies who were not the intended consumers fell critically ill after coming into contact with mercury contaminating their homes or from parents who used the products. Mercury poisoning is particularly dangerous for children and pregnant women. Tremors, memory issues, numbness, tingling, and abnormalities in vision or hearing are all symptoms of mercury poisoning. As a result, be cautious while selecting your favorite beauty product or experimenting with new brands.

2. Mascara

When you use your mascara wand, it becomes polluted! In the dark, moist environment of your mascara tube,  bacteria thrive. Even though many cosmetics contain preservatives that inhibit the formation of bacteria, bacteria accumulate over time. Certain bacterial illnesses, such as eye cysts or pink eyes, can result as a result of this.

Keep an eye on the expiration dates! Also, after four to six months (at most) from when you initially opened the tube, toss it away. If you notice clumping or a change in texture, color, or odor, do it sooner. No matter how much mascara is left in the tube or how much you spent on it, it should be thrown away and replaced.

4. Nail polishes

Nail paint contains dangerous chemicals that can affect your nails in a variety of ways, from merely discoloring them to making them thin and brittle or something more serious. Many brands advertise a five-for-one deal. These are nail polishes that don't include formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, or camphor, among other things. Strippers don't fare much better. Isopropylacetone, which can irritate the eyes and lungs, and ethyl acetate, which is an eye and respiratory irritant, are common ingredients in nail polish remover. Methyl ethyl ketone, another probable component, could be a neurotoxin. Oh, my God! As a result, in addition to damaging the enamel, the remover can also be toxic, and chronic use might lead to myeloma. I suppose I'll stick to natural nails from now on. 

5. Fragrance

We've been using perfume for generations, oblivious of the dangers it poses to our health. Halle Berry, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, and a slew of other celebrities have launched their perfume lines or have been compensated to use their names. After an oversaturation (pardon the pun) of the market in the early 2000s, these celebrity perfumes are making a comeback. Even the most beautiful, flamboyant, and opulent perfume bottles are nothing more than chemicals. Chemical perfumes are complicated blends of synthetic and/or natural ingredients that are added to products to give them a particular scent. Coumarin, BHT, citral, benzyl salicylate, oxybenzone, and lily are among the synthetic chemicals found in them. Lilyal, also known as butylphenyl methylpropional, is the last ingredient and has been related to cancer. From March 2022, the EU will prohibit its usage, so check what your favorite perfume is composed of before you spend your hard-earned money.
