SS7 (Signaling System 7) — the telecommunication backbone • not an app • that powers global phone networks. It helps calls and texts get routed. But here's the kicker: SS7 was built when everybody trusted each other. There were no modern security guards at the gate.
How Do Hackers Abuse It to Steal OTPs ?
1. Intercepting Communications — Hackers send a spoofed request through the telecom network, kind of like ringing the front desk and asking, ‘Please forward me the guest’s messages.’
2. Snatching OTPs — The system dutifully passes the OTP to the hacker, oblivious to the fact that it’s not authorized.
3. Accessing the Account — Armed with your OTP, the hacker logs in, resets passwords, or even drains your accounts—without touching your device.
