Due to its recent emergence, scientists are beginning to study the omicron, but extensive research soon reveals a deeper understanding of this difference and how genetic mutations can affect its spread and people infected with the virus. Bollinger and Ray said in the next few weeks they would clarify, answer more questions.
Is omicron highly contagious (contagious)?
According to Bollinger, there is some early evidence to suggest that Omicron diversity is more contagious than delta diversity. But at present, there is no evidence that conventional prevention strategies, including vaccinations, face masks, abstinence, ventilation and handwashing do not work to reduce the risk of infection or transmission.
Does the omicron cause the serious illness of COVID-19?
According to Bollinger in Omicron, there is very little data on this, but, so far, the answer seems to be no, but we will find out more about this in the coming weeks.
Do COVID vaccines still work and reduce the risk of serious illness?
According to Bollinger and Ray, this is a very important question, and with such little data, much is still unknown.
Bollinger also said, "My expectation is that a complete vaccination, including booster, will still provide a reduced risk of hospitalization and death". In the coming weeks, we will learn more about how the immune system created by the vaccine can make a difference in the omicron differentiation in the laboratory. If they could, that would be good news.
"I am also convinced that if we find that current vaccines do not provide adequate protection against serious illness or death due to these differences, we will be able to quickly adjust current vaccines to address the omicron."
Is omicron variation evident in the COVID test?
Commercially available diagnostic PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and COVID antigen testing still appear to be effective in differentiating omicron detection. We'll know more in the coming weeks about how fast home test works, so we can find new alternatives.
Do current antiviral drugs still work on omicron?
Some antimicrobial work by reducing the ability of the bacterium to make copies of it (duplicate) in the body. Remdesivir is the only such drug approved for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat COVID-19. Two other antiretroviral drugs, one from Merck and one from Pfizer, are under review by the FDA to see if they can be approved.
"I haven't seen the data yet, and I can suggest that these drugs will work better on the Omicron than in any other way" Bollinger said.
Is the current treatment for Monoclonal antibodies still effective for people infected with the Omicron variant?
Also, providing high-risk and high-risk patients with early access to Monoclonal antibodies reduces the risk of hospitalization and death by 70%.
Bollinger said, "We do not yet know how well the current Monoclonal antibodies will work in the Omicron variation, but we will soon know how they make the power of the omicron lab and If they do that, it will strengthen us. If they do not, I am confident that we will be able to quickly fix the existing Monoclonal antibodies to deal with this".
According to Ray, we still have a lot to learn about omicron, but we have tools available to help people manage risk, including wearing high-quality masks, or respirators. Those limited to FFP2 or FFP3 are more protective than fabric masks, and are usually easier to wear. Vaccination and getting a COVID-19 booster, handwashing and avoiding large household gatherings, especially for vulnerable people, are some ways to reduce the risk of infection.
"This new diversity is a reminder that we must use more tools to protect ourselves and those we care about, those we care about."
