Binford identified two kinds of demographic stress - internal and external.In the context of the origins of agriculture, Binford stressed external demographic stress, which is the result of immigration into an area by people from another area.
Kent Flannery (1969) instead examined the process of food production itself, rather than attempting to identify a single event that led to the beginnings of food production.Negative-feedback food procurement systems involve the balanced exploitation and use of food resources within an area and discourage any change. Positive-feedback food procurement systems encourage the exploitation and use of resources.The genetic changes resulting from crossbreeding increased the productivity of this resource, and once people recognized this increased productivity, they increasingly domesticated maize. This explains why people found agriculture useful.
The key may indeed lie in environmental change, although not the type suggested many years ago by Childe. The decline of big game in Europe was not really a factor in zones of early agriculture such as West Asia.
