A rocket stage set to hit the moon March 4 might not be from SpaceX after all.

MISIDENTIFICATION CONFIRMED :

          Astronomer Bill Gray, who first identified a rocket chunk headed to collide with the Moon as a SpaceX Falcon 9 booster stage, has now said that the object might not be SpaceX's at all. Following a correction in his calculations, Gray has now revealed that the debris set to slam into the lunar surface is from the Long March 3C rocket, that was launched by China for the Chang'e 5-T1 mission in 2014. Gray, who oversees the Project Pluto software used to track near-Earth objects, revealed that the anomaly in his calculation was pointed out by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) engineer Jon Giorgini.

We now have good evidence that it is actually 2014-065B, the booster for the Chang'e 5-T1 lunar mission. It will, however, still hit the moon within a few kilometers of the predicted spot on March 4, 2022 at 12:25 UTC, within a few seconds of the predicted time," Gray said in a new blog post.

And most of this information still stands, except the identity of the rocket. The crash will still happen on March 4. It’ll still create a small crater on top of the existing Hertzsprung crater (created by flying chunks of debris from the process that made our solar system, perhaps billions of years ago).

The European space agency commented:

"This still-evolving finding underscores the need for enhanced space tracking, and greater data sharing between spacecraft operators, launch providers and the astronomy and space surveillance communities."

Prof McDowell said he is 80% certain that the object on course to hit the Moon is from the 2014 Chinese rocket launch.

When the object was first identified, Prof McDowell told BBC News it will be the first known uncontrolled rocket collision with the Moon.

Since the start of the space age in 1957, about 6170 (excluding failed missions) rockets have been launched putting about 12,450 satellites into Earth orbit however only 5,000 of these satellites are still functioning, according to the data by European Space Agency (ESA) 's Space Debris Office at ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany.

According to the ESA, there are 128 million objects the size of 1 mm to 1 cm, 9,00,000 objects the size of 1 cm to 10 cm, and 34,000 objects greater 10 cm currently whizzing around our planet. Many of these objects are traveling around our planet at roughly 28,163.52 kph, or about 10 times faster than a bullet.
