The Man Who Fell Asleep in 1986 and Woke Up 19 Years Later

In 1986, a Polish railway worker named Jan Grzebski suffered a serious accident at work that left him in a coma. Doctors said he wouldn’t survive more than a few years. Yet, to everyone’s astonishment, Jan woke up in 2005—19 years later.

What makes his story even stranger is how the world had changed. When he fell asleep, Poland was still under communist rule, with food shortages and censorship. When he woke up, the country was free, democratic, and filled with supermarkets and cell phones.

Jan himself said he couldn’t believe the transformation—he compared it to “traveling from the Stone Age to modern times in a single night.” His wife, who had cared for him faithfully for all those years, became a symbol of love and resilience.

Though Jan passed away a few years later, his story reminds us that sometimes reality is stranger than fiction—and that waking up can mean more than opening your eyes.
