which Black history during slavery was a progressive ascent from the lowest to the highest levels of society. When you think of black history, we often think of the civil rights movement, John Brown's violent protest, the underground railroad. But black history does not end with a single incident. It is always in the process of changing every day. Even in the last ten years, big steps have been taken in high government positions by distinguished and highly deserving black Americans to make us all proud of our services to America. Colin Powell was a skilled general who demonstrated with calm dignity and authority that he could lead many men to war. He served as Secretary of State for President Bush during his first administration and was rewarded for his courageous efforts to reach the top of the government. Throughout the Government Hall and wherever Secretary Powell served, he was treated with the dignity and respect he deserved to serve his country. After the honorable service of Colin Powell, a prominent public servant was a black woman named Condoleezza Rice. It was a proud day for him to step into that office and show how far America has come since the days when blacks could not eat in restaurants similar to whites or drink from the same drinking fountains. And his service has been remarkable, meeting with heads of state from Africa to Europe to the Middle East to South America, and with great success throughout his career. These two black Americans are true examples of Dr. King's attitude towards people who are recognized not for their skin color  for the content of their character. Their excellence as leaders and their amazing resumes brought to their jobs provide a wonderful inspiration to black boys and girls at school, they too can thrive in this community they can go as far as they want and allow your natural gifts. Skills come at the grassroots level. They do not need any government program or special assistance to succeed. America is a long way to go, Dr. Rice and General Powell are examples of how this system can reward the best blacks and not neglect the contribution they can make to America's future. And now we are in a black history that has not yet happened. A piece of future history, it has to be written. We see another black leader preparing to be considered for the presidency of the United States in the country, perhaps the highest office of power in the world. And like Generals Powell and Dr. Rice, Barack Obama will not be judged as a black man or in the context of racial conflict in this country. Already he is receiving praise and acclaim for his leadership, eloquence, and his ability to bring a new perspective to this country. It is a proud day for all black Americans to consider Barack Obama for this position. He needs to work hard and be judged on his talent, skill, experience and ability to lead. However, this is a testament to the fact that the country has a better chance of winning that election than any other candidate. And if he wins he will break down another barrier for blacks and children across African American society and I can say I can do nothing if I try hard. This is the policy that every civil rights leader has wanted for blacks in America since the Civil War.
