America has been part of some of the most devastating wars in its long history. The First World War and the Second World War were very difficult conflicts and conflicts that imposed maximum taxation on the country's resources. But none of those conflicts can be compared to the civil war, not only in the brutality and destruction of human life, but also in the damage to social structure caused by that terrible conflict.
America is proud to have never fought in its homeland. Except for Pearl Harbor and 911 we never attacked our own soil. So war was waged against brother upon brother, against war against American, to allow for war even on American borders.

In modern times, we see the Civil War as a massive war to end the horrors of slavery in this country. And to be sure, the Civil War has always been a central part of black history and the starting point of the civil rights movement in America. But the causes of the Civil War were complex and varied, which made the negotiations and the resolution of the war more difficult than before the conflict.
The problem being fought is the right of states to self-determination, which is balanced with the rights of the federal government to decide matters within individual states. On the surface, this may seem trivial compared to the abolition of slavery, but in context, it is an important irony in light of our distant memory of our revolution against England for attempting to impose excessive control over the colonies. But the legacy of the Civil War is also one thing, that as Americans we can never turn our war machine on our civilians again.
