The care of animals

Perhaps your school has a branch of SPCA* and you are member. If so, you will know how to look after animals, and what to do if one is injured. But many people do not know, or do no care. Perhaps they have not thought about this

We sometimes see cats and dogs wandering about the streets with no one to take care of them. Often they have been injured or are suffering from some disease. They have been left there by their owner, who no longer want them, or perhaps their owner have moved to another town, and left their pets behind. When you see animals like this , take them to the SPCA or to a vet . If no one wants them , or if they cannot be cured, they will be killed painlessly.

Dogs: You should not give dogs scrap of food from the table . A grown- up dog should be give two meal a day- not more than . There should be dog biscuits, which can be bought quite cheaply, meat and sometimes fish. Once week boiled liver and raw meat should be given. 

A dog should have clean, dry box or kennel in which to sleep. It must be given regular exercise. It's coat should be brushed daily and it should be given regular bath.

Cats: Cats also need two meals a day with plenty of meat or fish. Vegetables are good for them sometimes, and they should have some milk every day. There should always be some clean fresh water for them too.

There is no room to discuss here how to look after all pet animals. Go to your library and find a book on pets. If there isn't one, you will find that an encyclopedia usually gives good advice on this subject.

1. Here is one last piece of advice. Be careful when you are choosing your pet. A big dog is not suitable for a small house. Remember, too, that wild animals never make good pets. They almost always die. It is very cruel to keep an animal that is used to freedom in a cage. This is true birds, too
