The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are the most prestigious and popular film awards. It was started in May 1929 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, located in Beverly Hills, California. PricewaterhouseCoopers has managed the voting process since 1935. In 1941, the confidential envelope system began and still exists. Thus, the phrase "envelope, please" became famous. Members of the Academy are invited by the Board of Governors. There are fifteen branches of membership based on different categories of awards.

For nearly sixty years, the Academy Awards were held in late March or early April. Since 2004, it has been held in late February or early March. The first award ceremony was held at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood. The Ambassador Hotel and the Biltmore Hotel were the venues until the early 1940s, followed by the Shrine Auditorium. In 1949, the awards were presented at the Academy Awards Theater. For the next decade, the venue was the theater in Hollywood. Next in line was the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The ceremony was then moved back to Los Angeles to the Los Angeles Music Center and Shrine Auditorium in 1968 and held there until 1988. In 2002, it was finally transferred to the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

The best clothes make fashion statements. The entire ceremony is televised live throughout the United States, except Hawaii and Alaska, with the first telecast in 1953 on NBC. There are performances from the Best Original Song category nominees and countless other performances. As claimed by the Academy, this broadcast attracts more than a billion viewers from all over the world.
