Most travelers to Costa Rica usually come during the ‘dry’ season from December to April, avoiding what is commonly known as the rainy season, from May to November. However, their fears about the rain often disappear as the ‘green’ season offers some unique benefits for tourists and nature tourists who want to truly experience Costa Rica’s protected rain forests, such as the well-known Manual Antonio National Park. Here are ten reasons why the ‘green’ season is still a good time to visit.
Second, the ‘green’ period. For the locals, this is a time of ‘green’, not ‘rainy’. Increased rainfall means that the plants are growing and for nature lovers this is the best part of the year when the dust is swept away, and the full glow of the forest emerges.
Third, it is very economical. It usually costs almost everything, from the number of vacation rentals to tourists reduced during the rainy season, making it an easy season to visit in your pocket.
Fourth, you will be able to avoid crowds. Anyone who has ever stood in one of the national parks on a busy ‘peak’ weekend can tell you that it is hard to enjoy the beautiful beaches and wildlife you see when the area is full of tourists with cameras. Visits with small crowds make everything from relaxing on the beach to eating a very pleasant experience.
Fifth, you can sit back and enjoy the show. Thunderstorms in the tropics are a spectacular sight. Since they are much stronger and more impressive than those in the temperate regions of the world, this is a remarkable manifestation of light and sound. So after a good morning at the beach, lie down on your hammock, drink a cup of Costa Rican coffee, and let the show begin.
Sixth, enjoy your rest. Nothing will make you fall asleep faster than the cool sound of rain outside while you are securely trapped in your bed.
Seventh, you will enjoy comfortable temperatures. The ‘drying’ season in Costa Rica is hot - REALLY hot, and humid again. For those who prefer a moderate temperature, dropping a few degrees during the rainy season can make a difference. The air is fresh and warm, but not as stressful as it can be during the summer months.
Eight, use the mango season. Costa Rica is full of native fruits and vegetables, but most trees bear fruit only after summer has passed. Another example of this is mango - if you visit from June onwards, you can pick up ripe mangoes on the ground as you go about your day.
Ninth, swimmers and surfers will enjoy the best waves. Costa Rica is famous for its staging of waves along the Pacific Coast and Caribbean. Although it is good all year round, the green season is when the swelling is usually bigger, and the surfing is better.
Tenth, hearing in the morning during the rainy season. The dawn of the morning after a heavy rainy night is a phenomenon in Costa Rica. As the sun rises over the clear clouds, sip your coffee as you gaze at the glistening forest and the breath of fresh air.
