Advances in technology have brought about major changes in society. The oldest known technology is stone tools used in prehistoric times, followed by controlled fire, which contributed to the growth of the human brain and the development of language during the Ice Age. The invention of the wheel in the Bronze Age allowed wider movement and the development of more complex machinery. Recent technological inventions such as the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet have lowered the barriers to communication and ushered in the knowledge economy.
While technology contributes to economic development and improves human welfare, it can also have negative effects such as environmental pollution and resource depletion, and cause social harm such as technological unemployment due to automation. As a result, philosophical and political debates continue about the role and use of technology, the ethics of technology, and how to mitigate its disadvantages.
