Symptoms of low platelets in dengue fever, what to do

The rainy season is at the end. However, dengue remains endemic. Many people have low platelets in this fever. Which is very dangerous.

In dengue, if the platelets are normal, the patient will be fine. The patient is not cured by giving platelets. Platelets can be low for many reasons. In dengue fever, the patient dies not because of platelet depletion, but because of dengue shock syndrome. So if the platelet count is above 10000 and there is no active bleeding there is no reason to panic.

* What happens in dengue fever

Blood vessels are affected by dengue virus. The small holes in the blood vessel become enlarged. With it, the aqueous component of the blood or plasma comes out. As a result blood pressure decreases, hematocrit or PCV or packed cell volume increases. To prevent this, the patient should be given adequate fluids. This liquid can be given by mouth or given intravenously.

The smallest of the three types of blood cells in human blood is the platelet. Platelets help in blood clotting. So if it decreases it can lead to bleeding and if it increases blood clotting can lead to heart attack and brain stroke.

The normal platelet count for adults is 150,000 to 450,000. When the blood platelet count is low, it is called thrombocytopenia. And when there is more, it is called thrombocytosis.

* Signs of decreased platelets

* Fine bleeding from any part of the body, which appears in the form of pinpoints. Purple marks appear on the skin. Because there is bleeding under the skin.

* Excessive menstrual bleeding.

* Bleeding from the gums or nose may occur.

* Bleeding with urine or stool.

* Cuts anywhere on the body, bleeding for a long time, etc.

* To be done in dengue fever

In case of dengue, do not check the platelet count frequently, but observe other aspects of the patient. For example, whether the blood pressure is normal, whether the patient is dehydrated or not, how the PCV or hematocrit of the blood should be seen. If this is the case, give adequate fluids or perform fluid correction, control blood pressure. If necessary, hospital admission should be done immediately. Delayed hospitalization increases the risk of death.
