Before individuals become prediabetic, a group of researchers from Klick Labs have developed a novel strategy for spotting the early signs of the body's inability to control blood sugar levels.
Their study's specifics, which were reported in Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, emphasise a novel analytical technique that emphasises a stage before prediabetes known as impaired glucose homeostasis (IGH). Data collected from continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) were used by the scientists in their unique mathematical model. Approximately 20% of the respondents, who had previously been considered healthy by medical standards, were found to have a glucose metabolism pattern resembling that of people with prediabetes, according to the results.
According to Jaycee Kaufman, main author of the study and a research scientist at Klick Labs, "for people with diabetes, blood glucose levels can rise and fall like a wild roller-coaster ride with steep drops and peaks." Although the patterns in patients with IGH were more like smooth waves than sharp peaks, intervention on this population could reduce the likelihood of progression to complete diabetes, according to the study.
A CGM was provided to 384 participants for the trial, and they were monitored by a doctor for two weeks. In accordance with the American Diabetes Association's recommendations, participants were classified as diabetes, pre-diabetic, or healthy. Patients were then reclassified into two groups based on their glucose homeostasis measures following the use of the mathematical model:effective or ineffective.
According to Yan Fossat, vice president of Klick Labs, "What was most surprising is that 20% of participants, who were evaluated using the standard screening tools for diabetes and were given the all-clear by a doctor, were then found to have impaired glucose homeostasis-reinforcing it is now possible to provide an earlier, more accurate, and sensitive assessment of people's diabetic status."

Risk variables like age, BMI, and family history are examined during screening and monitoring, while blood tests like the glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) are the mainstay of diagnosis.
