Spotify has launched a new simplified version of its music service called Spotify Lite, aimed at users in countries where access to the latest devices and software is not as common. The music service said it would work in the same way as its main application, but would be smaller in size and therefore easier to download and would allow users to set a data limit for music streaming. The app was launched on Google’s Android operating system in 36 countries in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. It will be available to users of older versions of Android. Kalle Persson, product manager at Spotify, said the new app was designed to help more people access the music streaming platform. “Spotify Lite was designed based on feedback from users around the world, allowing millions of people to enjoy the best music experience in the world, especially in areas where bandwidth and phone storage are limited,” he said. The music company said the app would only be 10 megabytes, several times less than the main Spotify app, meaning it can be easily downloaded to devices, even those with little space storage. Several large technology companies have begun to introduce “light” versions of their applications when they turn to developing countries for new users, but that Internet connections may be more data that is more expensive and less widely available. Facebook has launched The Lite versions of its main app, as well as for Messenger and Instagram.
