 Recycling is an important step towards reducing global warming and pollution caused by single-use plastics. For example, many countries have banned the use of all single-use plastic bags through public awareness campaigns and bans in certain major cities. Many municipalities and governments around the world encourage citizens to get involved in recycling practices and share their waste with local businesses. Although different types of plastics are used, most commonly they come from oil, paint, paper, and glass. As such, the main objective of this text is to provide some information on why plastic needs to be considered less suitable as a raw material for manufacturing items such as cups, bottles, and so on. The following paragraphs explore and recommend the benefits of using recycled materials instead of virgin ones.   

The first benefit of using recyclable products is that these goods do not require further processing. Therefore, the amount of energy consumed during manufacturing operations is reduced. Also, the manufacturers have control over the quality and quantity of the finished product. This results in cheaper products, lower costs, and less need for packaging. In terms of production, companies produce large volumes of goods at very low costs. Moreover, the end product does not contain harmful chemicals. Finally, the final product is ready to be sold for consumption immediately after opening. This process allows consumers to return items if needed. Additionally, the reusability of the product allows customers to reuse the container once it becomes too damaged to fit into a new one, for instance, at home or school. Most of these plastics end up in landfills because no efforts were made to remove them from the trash. On top of this, the government spends $1.1 billion annually to support domestic manufacturing processes. This explains why we should consider alternative ways such as buying products designed for sustainability, recycling, designing sustainable packaging, etc.  Secondly, when a consumer buys a used item, he might return the used item to a brand. However, when he receives a second used item from another vendor, he may decide to purchase the second item again. These two situations occur when a customer returns the second used item because now he needs both items. When purchasing second-hand products, more often than not, people also buy food from restaurants that sell reused dishes. Such cases lead to food contamination. If we want to avoid this problem, it would be advised consumers should be encouraged to eat healthier options, for example, buying frozen meals rather than regular ones. Alternatively, it is suggested that consumers take advantage of community collections or donate items to charities. To conclude the discussion, I am sure you have seen the advertisements asking consumers to give away old clothes in their closets by donating clothes or furniture at high prices. It seems every household has these items in its closets. By supporting communities that collect their unwanted items, we can achieve a larger goal of getting rid of unnecessary items that remain in households and reduce the wastage of resources.    

Another reason why I am concerned about promoting recycled products is the negative impact they can cause. Firstly, due to its long shelf life, plastic cannot decompose completely when subjected to natural elements like sunlight and humidity. Therefore, when disposed of correctly, the remaining components might take decades to disappear. Secondly, while recycling plastic saves money, it makes little to no difference regarding carbon footprint. When a company produces goods that consume resources in the form of fossil fuels, it contributes to climate change since greenhouse gases like CO2 are released into the atmosphere, causing changes in weather patterns and the earth’s temperature. Lastly, plastic contains small amounts of toxic substances that may prove dangerous to human health if improperly discarded, for example, dioxins from PVC. Unfortunately, the chemical composition of various types of plastic makes it impossible to determine whether a particular substance is harmful or not. Personally, my preference over other non-plastic materials is derived from the fact that the price of making something with recycled material is lower, and I can afford it better than ordinary plastic. 

Several measures should be taken to ensure the safety of the environment. One of the key factors is the design of a product. Designing products such as cups, glasses, toys, water bottles, etc., is essential in preventing damage to humans and animals. From this perspective, when selecting materials for making products, it is common knowledge that wood is more suitable than palm oil since the latter consumes large amounts of energy. Furthermore, using sustainable sources of plastic allows us to limit its production and minimize its detrimental effect on our environment. Currently, plastic production remains at 20% of total worldwide production. This explains why there are concerns about the harmful effects of plastic on the ecosystem. Several actions can help to mitigate the situation, such as increasing awareness, changing behaviors, and encouraging organizations to promote eco-friendly projects. Nevertheless, if we continue to allow the release of harmful substances into the soil, marine life may suffer dire consequences. Thus, by reconsidering our attitude toward single-use plastic, we will contribute to ensuring a greener planet and protecting the environment for generations to come. If we choose to act and take part in achieving this aim, we will see improvement in the well-being of humanity.
