After a prolonged illness, Shibu Soren, 81, the former Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM leader, passed away. His son, CM Hemant Soren, confirmed the news. PM Modi offered his condolences and emphasized Soren's dedication to giving tribal communities power.
He was admitted to the Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for more than a month and was hospitalised in the last week of June with a kidney-related issue.

Shibu Soren is well-known for being the party's founding patron and for leading the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for 38 years. Jharkhand's third chief minister was him. In 2005, Shibu served as CM for ten days, then from 2008 to 2009 and from 2009 to 2010. Shibu, a prominent figure from the Santhal community, was born in the Ramgarh district, then part of Bihar. He founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in 1972 with leftist trade unionist AK Roy and Kurmi Mahato leader Binod Bihari Mahato. Soren rose to prominence during the Jharkhand statehood movement, which resulted in the state's establishment in 2000. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from Dumka, a stronghold for the JMM. However, in the 2019 general elections, the veteran leader lost his grip on the constituency, as BJP's Nalin Soren defeated him by a margin of over 45,000 votes.
Shibu joined the government led by Manmohan Singh in 2004. However, due to an arrest warrant for him in connection with the 1974 Chirudih incident, which was the result of a conflict between Muslim and tribal communities, he was forced to resign. Following his release on bail, he was reinstated in the Union Cabinet, but soon resigned again to take over as the Jharkhand CM.
