Cancer is the greatest cause of mortality for children and adolescents worldwide, and it is a multi-disease epidemic. There are more than 100 different types of cancer, and they can appear practically anywhere in the body. It can be found in the lungs, kidneys, intestines, or blood. Cancer can strike anyone at any age, young or elderly. It starts with a single cell that changes and then grows out of control, and if left untreated, cancer can spread to other regions of the body and finally kill you. Cells are the basic units that make up our bodies, and each one has a specific function. Cells divide to produce new cells as they expand, and when they become too old or damaged, they die and are replaced by new cells. When something disrupts this orderly process, the cells proliferate out of control, resulting in cancer. As a result, cancer is a disease that develops when body cells lose control over their growth and interactions with other cells. The cells grow out of control and dominate the body's natural cells, making it difficult for your body to function properly. These cells proliferate in ways that the body can no longer manage; they can take on strange sizes and forms, grow and travel past their limitations within the body, and even destroy surrounding regular cells. The majority of malignancies create a lumpy mass known as a tumor (growth). Not all lumps, however, are cancerous. Cancerous lumps are referred to as malignant, while non-cancerous lumps are referred to as benign. Because some malignancies, such as leukemia, thrive in blood cells, they do not form tumors. Leukemia, brain and central nervous system tumors, and lymphomas are among the most prevalent cancers in children aged 0 to 14. The most prevalent types of cancer among adolescents aged 15 to 19 are brain and lymphomas, followed by leukemia, testicular and ovarian cancers, and germ cell tumors, among others. Some tumors grow and spread quickly, while others take a long time to develop. Treatments are also diverse for different cancers. Some types respond best to surgery, while others respond better to chemotherapy medications. The top 10 most common malignancies in children and adolescents are listed below, but first, what do you think causes cancer?
