It is always a pleasure to watch your favorite sports personalities play on the field of their respective games and when they announce their retirement millions of hearts get shattered. Well, SaniaMirza fans stay strong as the Tennis star on Wednesday announced that 2022 will be her final season on the WTA tour. This announcement came after she and her Ukrainian partner Nadia Kichenok suffered an opening-round loss in the women's doubles event of the ongoing Australian Open.
According to reports in Livemint.com, she after this match said, There are a few reasons for it. It is not as simple as 'okay, I'm not going to play'. I do feel my recovery is taking longer, I'm putting my three-year-old son at risk by travelling so much with him, that's something I have to take into account, said after her match. She further continued, I think my body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today, and I'm not saying that's the reason we lost, but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I'm getting older, she added.
She revealed that she is not able to find the motivation to come out and play anymore. She even said that she is not enjoying the process of playing any more as much as she used to before. But, she wishes to play the season, as she is enjoying it enough to play the year. She concluded by saying that she has worked very hard to come back, lose weight, get fit and set an example for mothers and new mothers to follow their dreams as much as they can.
Only Indian female to win WTA title
She is the first Indian woman to clinch a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) title of any kind. She won two WTA finals, first alongside Cara Black in 2014, and later in 2015, she partnered up with Swiss legend Martin Hinges to successfully defend her WTA crown.
She, India's most successful female tennis star, recently made the announcement that she's planning to retire from the sport after the current 2022 campaign. The 35-year-old made the announcement after crashing out of the Australian Open 2022 alongside her doubles partner Nadia Kichenok.
The former World number 1 had scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) singles title back in 2005, in Hyderabad. She last won a women's doubles title at the Open in September.
Overall, she has won one singles title and 43 doubles' titles in her immensely decorated career so far. As per WTA, SaniaMirza has won a 'total prize money' of $7,030,997 (around INR 52,29,35,323.57 crores approx) in her hugely successful career.
Often touted as the greatest Indian women's player in tennis, she and her doubles partner Nadia Kichenok crashed out in the first round of the Australian Open 2022, at the hands of Slovenia's.
Subsequently, the tennis icon announced that she will be hanging up her racquet at the end of the current campaign.
Addressing a press conference in Melbourne, She stated, "My body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today, and I'm not saying that's the reason we lost, but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I'm getting older."
