Global environmental conditions on Earth have been governed for more than 3 billion years by the interaction between life (represented by the planetary boundary, Biosphere Integrity) and climate. Human activities such as replacing natural land uses with others, altering the amount of water in rivers and soil, introducing synthetic chemicals into the ecosystem, and releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere all have an impact on these relationships.
For human activities to prevent dramatic changes in Earth conditions—changes that would probably reduce the Earth's capacity to support modern civilizations—must be respected and maintained so that they remain similar to those that have governed Earth conditions over the past 12,000 years.
The nine "planetary boundaries" stand for elements of the global environment that control the planet's stability and human-livability. The extent of the components' crossing the safe boundary levels is brought on by human-driven activities. The planetary boundaries framework proposes limits for the extent to which human activities can be allowed to impact critical processes without running the risk of potentially causing irreversible changes in the Earth conditions that support us, thereby identifying a "safe operating space" for humanity. It does this by applying the most recent scientific understanding of how the Earth system functions.
Metrics for all boundary's are published for the first time. All except one of the boundaries—the deterioration of the ozone layer on Earth—have been determined to be violated on six occasions. Global attention to the climate is insufficient. It is a top goal to create Earth system models that faithfully represent interactions between boundaries, particularly those related to climate and biosphere integrity.
The study, which was written up in Science Advances, is the third revision of the framework that 29 experts from eight different nations have worked on.
The Earth's "blood pressure" is too high
According to Katherine Richardson, professor at Globe Institute, director of the sustainability science center at the University of Copenhagen, and principal investigator of the study, the trend of growing boundary-crossing is concerning:
"Crossing six borders is a clear warning signal but does not automatically mean a catastrophe will occur. We could think of it like our own blood pressure. A heart attack is not certain, although it is more likely when the blood pressure is beyond 120/80. So we attempt to knock it down. We must lessen the pressure on these six planetary boundaries for the sake of ourselves and our future generations.
The study's key finding is that there needs to be more attention paid to interactions between the boundaries:
Johan Rockstrom, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the organization that first proposed the paradigm in 2009, asserts that focusing only on human-caused climate change is insufficient to prevent the earth system from suffering irreparable harm.
The integrity of the biosphere is the second pillar of our planet's stability, following climate change. Our research demonstrates that preventing global warming and preserving a healthy ecosystem for future generations are mutually dependent, emphasises co-author Wolfgang Lucht, Head of PIK's department of Earth System Analysis.
The impact of biomass use on biodiversity
Focus is drawn to the expanding use of biomass as a coal, oil, and gas substitute globally because to the requirement to respect the Land Use Change border. The end result of photosynthesis, in which plants transform solar energy into energy that can be utilised by other living things, is biomass, which provides the energy necessary to support biodiversity.
According to Richardson's research, people are using the equivalent of about 30% of the energy that was previously available to support biodiversity.
"Surely, the loss of biodiversity must be a result of the removal of so much energy that would have otherwise been available to nature. So, as one of two criteria for evaluating human impacts on biodiversity, we suggest using Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production (HANPP), or biomass usage.
Need for improved Earth system models
"The only way to navigate our current predicament with mounting, potentially catastrophic hazards at the planetary scale is a world that evolves inside science established parameters. We already understand this in terms of climate, where the Paris Agreement adopted the 1.5°C global warming limit as the climatic planetary boundary. In a same vein, when the Montreal-Kunming COP15 committed in 2022 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss on land and in the ocean, the world recognised the global boundary on biodiversity. Johan Rockström continues:
"However, our investigation demonstrates that this is by far insufficient. If we truly want to ensure prosperity and equity for all people on Earth, which goes well beyond climate alone, the Planetary Boundaries science offers a "guide for action." This calls for innovative Earth system modelling and analysis as well as concerted measures to safeguard, restore, and rebuild planetary resilience.
"Hopefully," continues Katherine Richardson, "this new study will serve as a wake-up call for many and increase focus in the international community on the necessity of limiting our impacts on the planet in order to preserve and protect the Earth conditions that allow advanced human societies to flourish."
