RECYCLING & TSUNAMI

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects. It prevents the waste of materials that have already been used and produces new materials for further use. Recyclable materials include glass, paper, metal, plastic, tires, and textiles. Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection center or picked up from the waste basket. These are then sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials for use. Recycling a material would produce a new and fresh supply of the same materials. For example, used paper would be converted to new paper, or old and broken glasses would be converted to new and fresh glasses. Sometimes the process is difficult and expensive. Another form of recycling is to bring out certain materials from a product and recycle them to produce another product. For example, lead from car batteries is removed and reused to produce another product. Effective recycling starts with household waste. In many countries, the authorities help households with bin bags with labels on them. Households then sort out the waste themselves and place them in the right bags for collection. Items include plastic bags, water bottles, rubber bags, and plastic wrappers. All glass products like broken bottles, beer, and wine bottles can be recycled. Cans from soda drinks, tomatoes, fruit cans, and all other cans can be recycled. When these are collected, they are sent to the recycling unit, where all the waste from each type is combined, crushed, melted, and processed into new materials. This makes the work less difficult. Nowadays, there is a general practice to reuse electronic equipment or components rather than discard them at the end of their life cycle. But the process is creating problems in our environment, due to the toxic elements from discarded electronic components. Recycling is beneficial in many ways. It helps to protect the environment because recyclable waste materials would have been burned down to reduce pollution. Recycling conserves natural resources because it reduces the dependency on raw materials. Recycling also saves energy and creates jobs. But recycling has got some disadvantages. Recycling can create more environmental problems, if not done right. Reveling does not guarantee good quality products. Recycling can give people a false sense of security, Recycling tons of garbage will require separate factories. Tsunami. A Tsunami, pronounced as ( soo - nah - me or tsoo - nah - me ), is a natural phenomenon consisting of a series of waves generated when water in the ocean, sea, or lake is displaced on a massive scale. A tsunami is a giant sea wave ( or series of waves ) created by a seafloor. It is caused by a sudden change in the relative position of an underwater undersea earthquake or volcanic eruption. Tsunamis are caused by violent movement on tectonic plates of the earth. Tsunamis are in fact a series of extremely long waves that are primarily associated with earthquakes. Tsunamis are often called tidal waves, but this is not an accurate description because tides have little effect on giant tsunami waves. A tsunami, which is a Japanese word that means " harbor wave, " is an enormous and destructive wave that scientists refer to as a Seismic Sea wave. Many people may know tsunamis by their layman's term as Tidal Wave. Tsunamis are most common in the Pacific Ocean, specifically near Japan. Tidal waves produced from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are relatively small wave heights in deep oceans. As a tsunami gets closer to coastal land the ocean depth decreases. The speed of the tsunami wave slows down but the height of the tsunami increases. That causes devastation in the coastal areas. However, volcanic eruptions can cause tsunamis. Not all undersea earthquakes or other seismic events create tsunamis, which is why tsunamis are difficult to predict. Tsunamis can reach speeds exceeding 600 miles per hour ( mph ) and can have heights of up to 30 meters ( 98 feet ). Tsunami waves do not have wavelengths of up to 200 km and the lasting periods are usually between ten and sixty minutes. Tsunamis have in fact been reported since ancient times, with the first recorded tsunami occurring off the coast of Syria in 2000 B.C. which is about 4,000 years ago now. The continents and sea floor that cover the earth's surface are part of a worldwide system of plates. These plates are always in motion. These motions are very slow, only an inch or two per year. Earthquakes occur when the edges of plates run into one another. Such edges are called fault lines or faults. Sometimes the forces along faults can build - up over long periods of time so that when the rocks finally break an earthquake occurs. When powerful rapid faulting occurs underneath or near the ocean and a large earthquake is produced.
