  High levels of serotonin can relax and reduce anxiety.  Low serotonin levels are associated with low mood, increased anxiety (hence the current popularity of SSRIs such as Prozac and others) and loss of appetite.  This is a very brief description of all the functions of serotonin in the human body - many of which have yet to be fully elucidated - but the full explanation is beyond the scope of this article.

 

 

 

  Needless to say, increased levels of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain are associated with a better ability to cope with stress, while a decrease in serotonin activity is associated with depression and anxiety.  High levels of serotonin in the body often lead to relief from depression as well as a significant reduction in pain sensitivity, anxiety and stress.  It has also been suggested that an increase in tryptophan would increase brain serotonin levels, while weight loss diets (e.g., calorie-reducing diets) may lower brain serotonin levels.  This can be due to the lack of substrate for production.  In carbohydrates.

  * Changes in plasma tryptophan and other major neutral amino acid ratios.

  * Prolactin level.

  * Cortisol levels (measured before and after stress).

  Surprisingly, the ratio of plasma tryptophan to other tested amino acids was 48% higher after a dose of casein!  This was accompanied by a decrease in cortisol levels and higher levels of prolactin.  Probably the most important and relevant for the average person reading this article, when the test subjects were stressed, they found "feelings of diminished depression".

 

 

  They concluded that "the use of dietary protein enriched with tryptophan increased the plasma ratio and, in some cases, improved the ability to compete by potentially altering brain serotonin."  This effect was not observed in the group.  If other studies can confirm these findings, whey may prove to be another safe and effective supplement in the fight against depression and stress, as well as lower serotonin levels due to dieting.

 

 

  Although there is a long list of hormones involved in the acquisition of appetite, some of which have been mentioned above, serotonin appears to be a key player in the game.  In general, experiments show an increase in serotonin availability or activity = decrease in food consumption and a decrease in serotonin = increase in food consumption.  If whey can selectively increase serotonin levels higher than other proteins, it can be very helpful for the dieter.
