As communities across the globe prepare to celebrate Pongal, an ancient festival that marks the harvest season, the Tamil Nadu government has unveiled an exciting initiative aimed at enhancing the festivities for lakhs of families. Pongal, a festival that honours the spirit of thanksgiving towards nature, farmers, and animals, holds immense cultural significance for the Tamil community worldwide.
In anticipation of Thai Pongal, 2025, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the distribution of a special gift set to rice family card holders and families residing in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps. The gift package, as part of the government’s annual Pongal welfare initiative, will include 1 kilogramme of brown rice, 1 kilogramme of sugar, and a whole sugarcane.The initiative, which will benefit over 2.2 crore people, is a part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that those in need experience the joy and prosperity associated with the festival. The total cost for the government for this project is approximately Rs. 249.76 crore.
