Omicron and the chance of mutation - Top updates

Patient deaths came at a time when reports of the new worrying strain said Omicron was causing mild illness compared to the dominant strain Delta, protocols, and it was just before the holiday season. Even if a clearer picture emerges of the latest variant of the coronavirus, we still don't know enough to fully assess the full threat it poses and how it is evading the immune system. But there is some data that, albeit weak, has shed light on this latter variant. For example, it has already shown a worrying ability to spread rapidly; Preliminary studies suggest that it is four times more transmissible than the delta variant. In South Africa, where it was first detected, the numbers have increased by more than 100 percent from week to week, and the country's president has now also contracted the virus. like Namibia and Zimbabwe, things fared no better. These countries have low vaccination rates, which could have contributed to their spread. But Omicron is now present in around 63 countries, many of which have high vaccination rates. Omicron has shown another property of concern: its ability to infect people who have already been fully vaccinated.

In India, of the 32 confirmed cases reported last week, 14 or more were breakthrough infections, prompting the center to urge states to closely monitor clusters and hotspots, which is absolutely necessary given the worrying rate of transmission. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine released a model this week that, without additional control measures, predicts 74,800 deaths in the UK due to abnormalities by April 2022.

Omicron will very likely advocate booster recordings. which are already recommended and available in some countries, including the UK and the US. The UK's NHS expanded the booster program after finding that an extra dose significantly restored protection against mild illnesses caused by Omicron. The myriad of mutations and their ability to cause advanced infections could tip the balance in favour of recommending boosters.

In India, this is a difficult decision to make in the future as there is still much to be done for regular vaccinations. While it is commendable that up to 81 million rupees have received a dose, only about 50 million rupees have received both doses - a void that urgently needs to be bridged. The WHO had said on Sunday that the Omicron variant made the vaccine less effective but caused less severe symptoms, a moot point that has given the UK's death. The Indian Ministry of Health has also stated that the symptoms of anyone previously infected with Omicron in India have been mild.

However, it will be a while before we can finally say that this variant with its 30 mutations does not cause any serious diseases. The Omicron variant and its ability to outperform the current group of vaccines is reminiscent of the fight against the coronavirus. Anthony Fauci, the senior medical advisor to the U.S. President, said a specific Omicron vaccine may not be required and reiterated hope that existing vaccines and booster shots will be sufficient to meet this new challenge. However, should Omicron mutate further, the long-term fight against the coronavirus will be much more difficult.
