  ATIONAL SCIENCE DAY 2022: Science and technology play an important role in the development of a nation. Over decades, India has had many scientists who children look up to as role models. These scientists, with their discoveries, have made India a renowned nation. Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, also known as CV Raman, is one such prominent figure in science and technology. NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY: HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE

In the year 1928, CV Raman discovered the Raman Effect or Raman Scattering which defines the inelastic scattering of photons by the matter which means there is an exchange of energy and change in light’s direction. In 1930, the scientist won a Noble Prize for his discovery. To celebrate the victory, in 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked the Central Government to mark February 28 as the National Science Day (NSD). Since then, National Science Day is celebrated on February 28.

 
National Science Day 2022 will be celebrated tomorrow, on February 28, 2022 across the country in honour and memory of the great scientist CV Raman. Often known as one of the greatest scientist and an inspiration to many, CV Raman's work has been groundbreaking for the future of science, and his life has been a learning lesson for many.
 
 
Always interested in research, CV Raman was known as a master in his field of light scattering. A topper in most of his educational life, Professor Raman went on to make some major contributions in acoustics and optics. Also considered to be a great teacher, he was appointed the first Palit Professor of Physics at the Rajabazar Science College in 1917.
 
National Science Day 2022: Why do we celebrate on February 28?
 
National Science Day or NSD is celebrated to mark the discovery of Raman Effect, a work that also earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. This discovery by the legendary Indian Scientist has a very interesting story set in abroad.
 
 
Professor Raman got interested in researching about this phenomenon on his trip to Europe. In 1921, he got curious to know the reason behind the blue colour of the Mediterranean Sea. This led him to conduct various experiments with transparent surfaces, ice blocks and light. He then observed a change in wavelength after light passed through ice cubes.
 
 
No sooner did he reason his findings, than he announced it to the world about the discovery of a new phenomenon. While CV Raman's work got him a lot of appreciation, there were people who were rather skeptical about it. However, as time passed by, his work got published and the world got something new in the field of science. In the end, it was due to the request by National Council for Science and Technology Communication, NCSTC that this day is now celebrated as National Science Day, NSD.
 
 
The theme of National Science Day 2022 is 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future.' The day will be marked by celebrations across educational institutions, public speeches, radio broadcasts, science exhibitions, debates, quiz competitions and so on.
 
 
Still alive in the hearts and minds of people, this genius left the world in 1970, at the age of 82. It is often said that even in his last days, he told his former student/students that the Academic journals should never die.
