NASA says there was a tremor similar to earthquake happened on Mars. Why "Monster Quake" ?

NASA says a magnitude 5 quakes has struck Mars. The quake was captured by NASA's Insider lander Mars Exploration. NASA has released more details. The tremors are of moderate intensity compared to earthquakes. This is the first time such an intense vibration has occurred on other planets. Scientists have named the quake "Monster Quake". This happened on May 4th.

Insight Lander is manufactured by Lockheed Martin Space and controlled by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Most of the scientific instruments in it were made by European agencies. The mission carrying the lander was launched from the Earth on May 5th 2018 on an Atlas rocket. The target was the Elysium Planitia region of Mars. The Insight Lander landed on the surface of Mars in November 2018. This lander is fitted with a seismometer of very high sensitivity. This device detected the vibration and informed the earth scientists about its magnitude. Scientists have found that 1300 tremors have occurred on Mars since 2018. When led to this mission, planetary scientists had some reasonable ideas about the internal structure of Mars. However, it was not until Insight deployed its seismometer that they began to gain an authentic shape to the planet's core. The mission still had a challenge. For the most part, Insight-recorded Marsquakes are relatively fragile and can only provide small amounts of data for small earthquakes. It made it difficult to get a clear picture.

"Since the launch of our seismometer in December 2018, we have been waiting for the 'big one'," said Bruce Banerdt, principal investigator at NASA's Southern California Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Insight, which is leading the mission. "This vibration is sure to give the planet another look. Scientists will analyze the data to learn new things about Mars in the coming years" -he added.

The main purpose of the lander was to assess the surface and internal structure of Mars. Scientists hope that this will also help in understanding the early structures of the Solar System. So far, no vibrations have aroused scientific curiosity. But the massive quake of May 4 has given new impetus to the study of Mars.

The big earthquake comes as Insight faces new challenges with its mission-powered solar panels. As Insight's location on Mars enters winter, there is more dust in the air, which reduces available sunlight. On May 7, 2022, the lander's available power dropped below the safe mode activation limit, where the spacecraft suspended everything except the most essential operations. This reaction is designed to protect the lander, which may occur again as the available power slowly decreases. As of the end of 2020, InSight completed its primary goal. By then, the data needed to show that Mars was seismically active had been provided. In addition, the earthquakes it raised gave the mission scientists enough data to get a reasonable idea of what the interior of the planet looked like. All that followed was a mission bonus.

There were also two moderate-magnitude earthquakes on Mars last year. The quake, S0976A, occurred in the Valles Marineris region on Mars. Situated at a distance of about 4000 km, it is also known as the Grand Canyon of Mars. Scientists have said that there are structural problems here and that is what causes the tremors.
