Plastic pollution is now the name of a terrible problem. This problem has become the cause of headaches all over the world. Every day a huge amount of plastic is being produced all over the world. In the last six decades, the amount has stood at 6.3 billion metric tons! But plastic does not rot easily and does not mix with soil. It takes about 400 years to rot! So most of the plastic is still there. About 11% of it has disappeared. 91 percent is left. These are lying in the sewers, on the roads. A large part of it fell into the sea. About 14 million tons of contaminated plastic falls into the sea every year. At present, 80 percent of the sea's waste and polluted waste is plastic. Marine animals are forced to eat this plastic. But died of indigestion. Again, plastic gets stuck in the necks of many animals. In a word, plastic pollution is one of the factors responsible for the destruction of the Earth's climate, marine life and some important cycles (such as the oxygen cycle).
So, what is the solution? Scientists, researchers and technologists are working on this. One such laudable initiative is called Miniwiz. The various initiatives and efforts of this Taiwan-based organization to eliminate plastic pollution are truly astonishing. And, behind it is founder Arthur Huang.
Arthur Huang is an architect and civil engineer. Born in Taiwan. She moved to the United States at the age of eleven. Cornell studied architecture at the university. There he received several awards for his work. This includes the Charles Goodwin Sands Medal. The award is given for outstanding work in architecture or art. Arthur then moved to Harvard. He completed his Masters in Architecture in 2004. But his special interest was in green business. While studying, he noticed that many people talked about solving environmental pollution problems. But none of this is so realistic. It is not seen that anyone has really worked on this later. Arthur wondered what could be done. He returned to his native Taiwan and began teaching architecture at Tunghai University. He also started teaching as a part-time or part-time assistant professor at the National Chao Tung University.
At this point, Arthur Huang understands better that the real work is not being done on the issue of environmental pollution. His focus is on plastic pollution. He thinks that if somehow plastic can be recycled and used, it will solve a big problem. But what will be the use of these plastics? To find the answer to this question, Arthur turned to his own study and experience. Architecture! Miniwise was formed through this. The goal of Miniwiz was very strange. It may sound unusual to hear this in 2021, when Miniwise is almost 18 years old.
When Arthur Huang embarked on Miniwiz in 2005, he was joined by Jarvis Liu, another Tunghai University graduate. They both deal with their confidence as they choose to embark on their play activities. Not only this, with the help of fire you can do welding. Plastic Trash-Tech. Using this technology, Miniwiz makes hexagonal tiles from plastic waste. A tile can be made with five plastic bottles. 1 tile can be made from the lid of 50 bottles and the ring on the mouth of the bottle with the lid. These are not future technologies. Miniwiz has already made a lot of such tiles and is making them regularly. Also, Miniwiz is making different types of 'bricks' with plastic waste. The word 'brick' is not appropriate here. Because, bricks are made by burning the soil. Honestly, what Miniwise is making, there is no suitable name for it in Bengal. Because, something like this is not common in this country. One such type of brick is called polybrick. These transparent bricks are both strong and durable. There will be no lack of natural light inside due to transparency. Plastics are said to be soundproof, although this depends largely on the thickness of the walls. It is designed in such a way that the necessary LEDs and solar panels can be placed inside it. It is not transparent. It also has soundproof features. There is no need to build a wall with polybars on it with a separate mortar (the cement paste used to make the walls between two bricks). Polybar has its own pin and lock system. The pin will fit in a certain groove, two polybars will get stuck. There is also a second version, Brick Lite. If needed, cement or concrete can be mixed for interior design. Made from plastic waste means made with plastic. You may be wondering, is it really possible to build a strong, livable house with plastic? How real is it? If you think so, a big surprise is waiting for you. Echoark. This 9-storey public museum is an eco-building or eco-friendly house. Made entirely with 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles. It uses Miniwise's own invention Polybrick. Built in 2010, the museum is open to the public.
The whole house is lit by natural light during the day. There are also solar panels. Ecoark stores solar energy throughout the day. With that power, all the LED lights inside it run at night. It weighs 50 percent less than a normal building. But it is capable of handling any natural disaster. Ecoarc has also been featured as a National Geographic megastructure.
