Mahatma Gandhi  -  Biography- What a man

 

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He was named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi after his grandfather who died before he was born. His father's name was Mokshagundji Dharamsinhji. He had two brothers and three sisters. He was educated at Rajkot High School and then went to London where he studied law at Inner Temple. After returning to India, he became involved in Indian politics and founded the Non-Cooperation Movement. In 1893, he married Kasturba Makanji (1868 -1950), daughter of barrister Manilal Nehru, and they had four sons and two daughters. He was elected president of the Congress party in 1915 and led the independence movement until his assassination in 1948. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1930.

Gandhiji - a good soul

 Gandhi was a great leader, thinker, and social reformer. He believed in nonviolence and passive resistance. He wanted to free India from British rule. He was a vegetarian and refused to eat meat. He said that if people were given freedom, they would take care of themselves. He was a pacifist and did not believe in war. He believed that violence only breeds more violence. He thought that people should live peacefully together. He believed that everyone deserved equal rights. He believed that women should have the same rights as men. He believed that everyone should be treated equally. He believed that everyone deserves respect. He believed that everyone has the right to speak their mind. He believed that everyone is responsible for what happens around them. He believed that everyone can change things. He thought that we should treat others how we want to be treated. He believed that we need to love ourselves first. He believed that we shouldn't judge people based on their race, religion, gender, or nationality. He believed that we don't know everything about someone else. He believed that we can learn something from everyone. He believed that we have to work hard to get ahead. He believed that we must help those less fortunate than us. He believed that we are all connected. He believed that we all share the same problems. He believed that we cannot solve our own problems without working together. He believed that we do not always make the best choices. He believed that we often hurt each other. He believed that we sometimes need to fight for what we believe in. He believed that we will never truly understand another person unless we try. He believed that we may disagree with someone but still respect them. He thought that we deserve happiness. He believed that we owe it to ourselves to find happiness.

Gandhiji Accomplishments

 Gandhiji started his political career at age 16 as a member of the Indian National Congress.  He became the president of the Indian National Congress in 1915. He founded the non-violent civil disobedience movement called Satyagraha.

He led many campaigns against British rule in India.

He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948. He wrote several books including Hind Swaraj (Indian Home Rule) and An Autobiography. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, posthumously in 1950. He was declared a national hero by the Government of India in 1954.

He was given the title Mahatma (Great Soul).

Final words

 

 Nehru famously replied that Gandhi was "a great man, but he had his weaknesses, his moods and his failings." Gandhiji thought that no one is perfect. He thought that we were all human beings. He thought that we'd all die someday. He believed that we live in a world full of suffering. He thought that we could end poverty and hunger. He believed that we'd all be happier if we lived in peace. He thought that we've got to keep trying.
