Mark Haddon has written an excellent book that has become a bestseller and has won the Book of the Year and novel awards. Mark Hadden himself drafted the book, Would anyone like to read about a fifteen-year-old disabled boy who lives on earth? Is said to have asked. Little did he know that the boy with a disability of exactly fifteen years had made his book stand out, won awards and stood out as a significant seller. The title of the book is "Interesting incident of dog and boy Christopher during the night."
He can name all the countries of the world and their capitals. He has a good knowledge of photographic memory and mathematics and science. Despite his extraordinary intelligence, he was unpredictable, could not understand the figures of speech and was associated with jokes. Many people see him as an untouchable stranger. Two common symptoms are present in people with dementia and those with mental health problems. Autism is a developmental disorder in the autism spectrum disorder group. This condition is mainly characterized by impairment in socialization, imagination and communication. Syndrome is subdivided into less common sense, but generally extraordinary intelligence in the fields of mathematics, music, art, and memory.
In the story, Christopher's parents split up. His mother decided to leave Christopher and his father because she could not bear the demands of having an autistic child. Parents caring for special children, such as those with autism, are more stressed than most parents because their children have special demands, abnormal behaviors, and different abilities compared to other children of the same age. Introducing these children can be very embarrassing, leading to unusual reactions. An example of this is when an autistic child cries for no apparent reason and starts beating himself up. Most likely, something caused him or her to get upset, but he or she can not tell because he or she does not know how it is. Some autistic children with sensory integration problems may be hypersensitive to touch, stress, movement and sound. They show certain behaviors that are sometimes difficult to understand, such as avoiding certain foods and drinks, pinching or hitting, repetitive movements and chattering. Some of them also show a strong adherence to certain routines and a fear of new places or people. Meeting the needs of these children and coping with their behaviors is not easy and therefore leads to a lot of stress.
Autism is a disorder that is affecting more and more children. They thrive on security and should avoid anything that feels like a threat to their safety. However, many aspects, conditions and demands of the society make them insecure and having to deal with these often causes them a lot of anxiety. Unknowingly and unintentionally, children with autism are constantly anxious for something new or foreign to their understanding. As in the book, when Christopher had to cross the area of a town he knew, he was physically ill and frightened. Unlike most children, people with autism are not easily adapted to new environments or situations. The process of learning to understand and accept what was previously unknown to them can lead to a high level of anxiety.
Although adapting and coping with autistic children may seem like a daunting task, much has already been studied and published about proper management that reduces not only child anxiety but also their parental stress. Some techniques, such as Cognitive Behavior Modification, Behavior Modification Techniques, and Environmental Modification Techniques, have been shown to be effective in changing abusive behaviors and improving the learning skills of children with autism. For some, if they have compounding conditions other than autism, additional treatment may be needed as advised by a doctor. Autistic children who have manic depression due to their dissatisfaction with involuntary involvement in their self-defense behaviors may need more treatment than mentioned earlier.
Christopher's story ends with him being able to overcome the challenges that worried him and his mother deciding to come back to take care of him. As in this fictional novel, the same can be achieved in real life when it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety between families who have to deal with the situation. Through proper management, medication or treatment, stress and anxiety in parents and autistic children can be effectively addressed.
