The Basics of Korean Cooking

Many people are familiar with kimchi, the spicy cabbage-based dish that is ubiquitous in Korean cuisine. But it's not just about kimchi! There are many other dishes that make for delicious meals and can be made either at home or with a little help from your local Korean market.

1) Doenjang Jjigae - This soup is made of fermented soybean paste, vegetables, and water. It is typically served as an accompaniment to rice and side dishes such as braised tofu or boiled eggs. The soup has a savory flavor that balances salty and sweet tones.

2) Mandu - These stuffed dumplings are eaten across Asia but originated in Korea.

Essential Ingredients for Korean Cooking

There are many traditional dishes in Korean cuisine and here are a few ingredients that can be found in most of them.

-Kimchi: Kimchi is the most ubiquitous side dish or main dish in Korea. It's a spicy, pungent fermented cabbage with variations of ingredients like carrot, radish, cucumber or apple, depending on the region. -Doenjang (fermented soybean paste): Doenjang is an essential ingredient for marinating meat dishes like bulgogi and galbi as well as for making sauces like ganjang (soy sauce). -Parsley: Parsley is used in kimchi, but also in many other soups and stews.

Popular Korean Dishes

To get started making korean dishes, you'll need a few ingredients. Kimchi is the most recognizable, but there are many more options. Here are some of the most popular korean dishes and what you'll need for each dish:

- Banchan - Any type of vegetable (chopped), soy sauce or salt, garlic powder (optional)

- Bibimbap - Rice, beef/chicken/tofu, carrots, cucumber, spinach leaves, sesame oil/sesame seeds

- Bulgogi - Beef ribeye (sliced), garlic cloves (minced), soy sauce or salt, brown sugar or honey

- Jjigae - Pork belly (sliced), hot pepper flakes or red pepper flakes

Tips for Making Perfect Korean Dishes

The first step in making a dish is usually seasoning the vegetables. This can be done by frying them in oil for about ten minutes or soaking them in cold water for an hour and then boiling them. Once the vegetables are cooked, it's time to add soy sauce, garlic and ginger. Use a bit of sugar as well if you want a sweeter taste. Stir-fry the vegetables for about five minutes before adding meat and fish sauce. Cook until everything is tender, then serve with rice!
