Who has not heard these lines ? At least in India , we give pretty much importance to things like Milk , Juices , or Buttermilk . We believe that they add nutritious value to our health .
But are we drinking it at the right time ?
What does this question mean ? Can't we drink it at " any " time ?
Let's see !
According to Ayurveda, there are “3 Doshas” that always have a significant impact on our body.
Those are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In the morning Vata plays a more dominant role in the body, similarly Pitta in the afternoon, and Kapha in the evening. So to cope with these doshas, Ayurveda has thoughtfully specified particular timings to drink particular fluids.
Let's understand when and what we should drink!
1. Water, Juices:
In the Morning as we discussed, Vaata plays a major role in the body. That's why we have a lot of Vayu (air) in the body. One of its main purpose is to regulate bowel movement.
So to balance the Vayu in the body, we are advised to drink water in the morning. We can also drink fruit juices after breakfast as juices have a great quantity of water in them.
As rain is able to calm down a storm, similarly water is able to balance the Vayu in the body. Simple!

2. Buttermilk:
In the afternoon, Pitta(Agni) has more effect in the body. Sun is directly connected to Agni, and thus Pitta. As the intensity of Agni increases, Pitta becomes intense. That's why we are advised to consume drinks that can calm down the Pitta in the afternoon.
There are two things that are most effective on Pitta, one is Ghee from cow’s milk and the second is buttermilk. And that's why we should drink buttermilk in the afternoon after lunch.
It helps in digestion and makes you feel comfortable after a heavy meal.
3. Milk:
Ayurveda has advised drinking milk at the night. Because at the night, we have a lot of Kapha(cough) in the body. And to cope with that, cow’s milk is the most effective option we have. Not Buffalo’s milk, as it can increase cough.
Also note, that milk should never be consumed by mixing it with banana or other sour fruits as it causes problems like cold, cough, and various allergies. When we combine milk with items of incompatible taste, it becomes indigestible and causes more toxins in the body. However warm milk can be consumed with semolina, lapsi, dates, almonds, and raisins.
Keeping that in mind, try to drink milk in the night, after at least 2 hrs of dinner.
Hope now you have a clear idea of what Ayurveda says about the correct timings to drink Water, Buttermilk and Milk in a day.
The thing is, it may not cause any side effects if you do not follow it, but for sure, you will see a lot of good changes in your health if you follow it over a long time.
