Not only India, but also many countries of the world, are showing interest in the South Pole of the moon. Countries around the world want to explore the moon's South Pole because it could be water ice.
Traces of water have already been found on the moon. In the early 1960s, before the Apollo landings on the moon, scientists speculated that the moon might have water. But samples brought back to Earth by Apollo in the late 1960s and early 1970s were found dry.
Thus, it was said that there was no water in it. Then in 2008, Brown University researchers reexamined those models with new technology. They found hydrogen inside the volcanic glass they discovered. That means it had a source of water.
Then in 2009, Indian Space Research Institute's Chandrayaan-1 probe discovered water here. But ISRO did not disclose this and waited for NASA to say. The same NASA probe discovered water here.
Water has been confirmed so far on the surface of the moon. But the quantity and nature of the water there is yet to be ascertained. By examining the water in there, many things can be discovered.
Mainly, the igneous rocks that have hit the Earth have also hit the Moon. Thus, the properties of those stones can be known. You can also learn about the volcano there. Essentially, if there is water, there will definitely be living things.
Likewise, if there is water, there will be crops. Or there will be favorable conditions for crops to grow. Due to the presence of water, hydrogen and oxygen inside will create a favorable environment for breathing. This makes finding the water found at the South Pole of the Moon very important.
The craters on the southern side of the moon have not seen sunlight for 2 billion years. Sunlight shines only on light surfaces. This is because the Moon's axis is 88.5 degrees vertical. Due to this, the Sun cannot send light to the southern part of the Moon. Thus, the southern part of the moon is still a secret.
The temperature here is as low as minus 230 degrees Celsius. These are all black, icy, secretive, mysterious giant craters. It is assumed that there may be many ice cubes inside.
