La Isla de las Muñecas can be found in the Xochimilco canals in Mexico. The Xochimilco canals have their own mythology. The canals are literally alive with bustle during the day. The many trajineros (boats) and flower, fruit, and vegetable sellers will brighten up the waterways. That is why they are known as floating gardens. Locals, however, avoid these waters after midnight. Under the surface, terrible and demonic entities are said to lurk. The Nahuales are the most dreaded; dark creatures that may masquerade themselves as animals like fish and black leopards. They lurk beneath the surface, waiting to steal the lives and souls of unwitting travelers.
Other sinister spirits reported haunting the waters include beings that may transform into black-eyed small girls. They attempt to drown their victims by luring them into the water. These beings' victims are never found. La Llorona is another spirit who roams the grounds surrounding the canals. This is a woman who is trying to find her children. Legend has it that she murdered her own children first, but now she sobs and weeps for them. Locals are afraid of the canals at night and avoid discussing them.
These eerie traditions date back to the time when the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés visited this Aztec realm. His initial visit was cordial. He was even given a tour of the neighborhood. But when he returned from Spain the second time, he brought an army with him. He murdered anybody who got in his way and pillaged villages. He killed out the majority of the Aztecs. Over 30,000 dead have been dumped into these canals. This most likely created a paranormal pathway for evil beings to travel from their dimension into ours.
A little island can be located in the midst of these canals. Julian Santana Barrera was the owner of this small floating island. He was living a quiet and solitary life until he came upon a tiny child in the ocean near his island. He attempted to rescue the infant from the water, but it was too late. In his arms, the unfortunate youngster perished. Julian never really recovered from this horrible experience.
Julian faced another scare just a few days after finding the little child. He mistook another girl for drowning in the same area. When he got a closer look, he realized it was merely a doll. He was confident the doll was sent by the little girl because it was floating in the same location. He even believed it contained the girl's soul. So, in order to honor the girl, he gently removed the doll from the water and hanged it in a tree.
Julian was distraught since he hadn't been able to save the girl's life. One doll simply wasn't enough to keep her pleased. Julian began gathering old, broken dolls and placed them in the tree as well. He had accumulated so many dolls that they no longer fit in the tree. So he began adorning his entire island with them.
As if dolls weren't frightening enough, the weather, jungle critters, and plants began to take control. Their eyes either went milky white or simply vanished, leaving a black hole. Their hair became entangled with massive cobwebs, and limbs would fall off. Black mould would eat its way into their faces, transforming them into demons.
Many people believe that the dolls, not only the one from the small child, are haunted by ghosts. Some people have reported seeing the dolls move their heads, wink, and even talk. This occurred during a visit to the island by Zak Bagans and his Ghost Adventures crew. One of the dolls began speaking in a mechanical voice. It had evidently been up there for a long time, so the batteries must have died. Oh no, another reason to despise dolls!
To make things even creepier than they were... Julian Santana Barrera drowned in the canal in the same area that the girl did in 2001. Do you believe he was a Nahuales victim? Is his spirit now housed inside a doll as well? The island was offered to the public after his death. Would you be willing to take the risk of visiting the island?
