Episode 79 of Attack on Titan “Memories of the Future” opened with Eren and Zeke travelling through the memories of their father.
Zeke is trying to convince Eren that he was brainwashed by their father, but things start to get complicated when Grisha discovers the Royal hideout several years before the fall of Shiganshina.
Zeke and Eren are discussing their father in one memory when Grisha suddenly wakes up from sleeping and seemingly recognises Zeke – despite this only being a memory of a past event.
The two brothers see various memories from Eren’s childhood and watch in horror as Grisha goes to the Royal hideout to kill the family.
Grisha then explains how he has seen the future thanks to a special ability for the Attack Titan – which lets users see the past and future memories of those who inherit the Attack Titan.
Grisha appears to have a breakdown, doubting his commitment to killing the children in front of him. However, Eren does the unthinkable and encourages Grisha to slaughter the family – breaking all concept of time and directly influencing the events in the memory.
Grisha emerges from the Church an emotional-wreck, having just murdered an entire family whilst also bearing witness to Eren’s future actions. Once again, he recognises Zeke standing in front of him, falling to his feet and embracing his son – who is starting to realise the extent of Eren’s powers.
