The upcoming clash between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings at the Sakai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur will be the 37th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), meaning the 74-match season will officially be hitting the halfway mark.
And it has certainly been a roller-coaster journey, with the 16th league season maybe featuring the most unexpected turns. Call it the effect of the "Impact Player" rule, but this season has seen a lot of last-second surprises and nail-biting finishes. It has already been a season to remember, from Rink Singh's five straight sixes to thrilling last overs from players like Sandeep Sharma and Arshdeep Singh.
Before their matchup in Round 2 against the Chennai Super Kings, the Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings look at how each team has performed thus far this year.
The first four
Gujarat Titans (GT), the current champions, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the four-time champions, are tied atop the 10-team standings with 10 points each. CSK is in the lead because of their higher net run rate. After a difficult start, CSK has won each of their previous three games, giving the impression that they are currently on a roll. With the way things are going, these two teams seem to be favorites to face off in Qualifier 1.
They are closely followed by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who have the highest NRR among the four clubs that are tied on eight points each, and the Rajasthan Royals (RR), who seem to have continued where they left off after finishing as runners-up last year. Mid-table
RCB is located just after the top four positions. They would have hoped to overtake RR and LSG for third place, but Nitish Rana's KKR beat them handily to achieve a season double. RCB has so far been a mixed bag.
It’s been a similar story for the Punjab Kings, who certainly have shown a lot more promise under Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran’s leadership — the latter taking over after ‘Gabbar’ was sidelined with a shoulder injury. They began on a solid note with back-to-back victories — giving the team owners hope of reaching the playoffs for the first time in nine years — but have had a mixed run since. Their victory over Mumbai Indians, however, underlines the potential that this team has in breaking into the top-four, especially with their power-hitters in the middle order and an exceptional death bowler in Arshdeep Singh.
And at the seventh spot are KKR, who have given their hopes of reaching the playoffs a boost following a convincing victory over RCB that snapped their four-game losing streak. KKR’s strength lies in their stacked spin department — which played a key role in both of their wins against RCB this season. Additionally, with a new power hitter in Jason Roy at the top of the order, the two-time champions can still put up a fight in the second half of the group stage.
Bottom half
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians would be extremely disappointed with how their season has panned out so far. Not only would fail to reach the playoffs for a third season in a row be a first for Mumbai and tarnish the legacy of the most successful franchise in the history of the world’s biggest T20 league, but it would also demoralize what is a vastly talented squad filled with many promising youngsters. five-time winners Mumbai Indians would be very unhappy with the way their season has developed thus far. The Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals lie at the bottom of the table with two wins each in seven outings, the latter in the 10th spot due to their inferior NRR. Delhi, however, is the team that is on the mend between the two. They opened their account with a victory over KKR before successfully defending a low total against SRH to give a glimmer of a late miracle.
A number of their match-winners, including Kieron Pollard, Hardik Panda, and Krunal Panda, either hung up their boots or joined other franchises, causing Mumbai to undergo a significant shift. Even though several of the newcomers, including Cameron Green, Tim David, Thilak Varma, and Hrithik Shaken, have shown flashes of brilliance this season, the team hasn't quite been able to gel as a whole.
