A report in cricket.com.au said that the Australian Test captain, who was roped in by KKR for Rs 7.25 crore, is returning to Sydney for his rehabilitation ahead of the national team's tour of Sri Lanka next month.
The report adds that Cummins' recovery is expected to take a fortnight.
Besides leading the Test side, Cummins is also a vital member of the ODI and T20 teams as Australia is set to embark on a hectic 18-month-long cricket calendar.
Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered a big injury blow as their star pacer Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2022. According to cricket.com.au, the right-arm pacer is out of the competition due to a minor hip injury. Cummins is now set to head back to Sydney to recover from the injury. The injury will be a big blow for KKR as the two-time champions look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive this season.
The right-arm pacer has struggled with consistency in IPL 2022. He started the season on a stunning note by slamming an unbeaten 56 while picking two wickets against five-time champions Mumbai Indians. He had hit six sixes during that whirlwind knock. However, his form with the ball kept deteriorating as he conceded 51, 40 and 50 runs while taking only two wickets in the following three games. He was subsequently dropped from the playing eleven as KKR preferred New Zealand veteran Tim Southee.
Cummins was recalled in the playing eleven earlier this week against Mumbai Indians and he justified the call with a stunning performance. The Australia superstar picked up 3 wickets while giving away just 22 runs to help KKR beat Mumbai in a must-win clash. But KKR will not be able to avail his services anymore this season because of the injury. According to the report, Cummins had been managing the niggle through the IPL.
However, he decided to return home and complete rehabilitation because of KKR’s current situation is the tournament. KKR are still in the playoffs race but are unlikely to progress ahead. The two-time winners are currently languishing at the 7th spot in the points table with only 5 wins from 12 games. KKR need to win their remaining two games to stay in the hunt for a playoffs birth. And even if they do that, they need other results to go their way too. In such a scenario, KKR’s chances of going to the playoffs are looking highly unlikely.
