What is 'IBD'?
The immune system of the human body is usually used to fight infections or bacterial infections. But if, for some reason, the immune system destroys the body's own cells or tissues and creates inflammation, instead of being used against germs, the affected organ loses its normal function. Just as a country's army starts attacking its own people instead of attacking foreign enemies, so does the human immune system destroy its own body without destroying disease-causing germs. One such disease caused by abnormal inflammation of the digestive tract is called 'IBD' or 'Inflammatory Bowel Disease'.
There are two types of IBD or Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
♦ Ulcerative Colitis: It mainly causes inflammation or ulcers in the colon.
♦ Crohn's disease: Any part of the digestive system (mouth to anus) can be affected in this disease. But in most cases only the small intestine, large intestine or both parts can be affected.
Symptoms:
♦ Diarrhea or loose stools
♦ Abdominal pain.
♦ Passage of blood with stool.
♦ Feeling mild fever.
♦ Fatigue
♦ Loss of body weight.
♦ Aversion to food.
Complexity:
♦ Intestinal narrowing.
♦ Fistula.
♦ Inflammatory diseases of eyes, skin and joints
♦ Colon cancer etc.
At what age does IBD develop?
Although in most cases, the symptoms of this disease usually appear before the age of 30 years. However, this disease can occur at any age. Treatment: Although IBD is not a completely curable disease, it is completely controllable by taking various types of medicines regularly. In some cases, patients with IBD may require surgery.
What changes should be made in lifestyle?: ♦ Foods and drinks that aggravate the symptoms of the disease, such as milk and milk products, open or street food should be avoided. ♦ Smoking and drinking should be avoided. ♦ Try to reduce stress, although stress does not cause IBD. However, it can aggravate the signs and symptoms of the disease. Exercise, yoga, can be helpful in this regard.
Remember:
♦ Medicines should never be stopped or dosage changed without doctor's advice. Ask the doctor about the possible side effects of the medicine. A doctor should be consulted if there are side effects of the medicine.
♦ Remember, the more you can control your disease, the less your disease will control you and the better your quality of life will be.
♦ Even if there are no symptoms of the disease, there should be regular follow-up with the doctor. ♦ Monitor disease severity and symptoms. Inform the doctor if the symptoms of the disease reappear under medical control. Because these symptoms may not always be due to IBD. It can also be caused by dietary complications or bacterial, viral invasion of the intestinal tract.
♦ Be informed by the doctor about your disease and general condition.
♦ The extent of your disease and the methods used for treatment so far and what are the alternative.
