India Lifts Rice Export Restrictions, Causing Global Price Drop

This decision has led to a significant drop in global rice prices, impacting producers in countries such as Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam, who had temporarily benefited from India's earlier export limitations. The policy shift is expected to provide more affordable rice to markets in Africa and East Asia, where it is a dietary staple and essential for animal feed. India aims to increase its agricultural and food exports to $100 billion by 2030, up from $48.15 billion in 2023-24, reflecting the critical role of agriculture for 42% of the country's population.

Volkswagen Challenges $1.4 Billion Tax Bill from Indian Authorities

Volkswagen is contesting a $1.4 billion tax bill issued by Indian authorities, who allege that the company's Indian subsidiary misclassified imports to benefit from lower duties. The customs department claims that since 2012, Volkswagen imported complete car kits labeled as spare parts to reduce tax liabilities, resulting in substantial underpayment of duties. Volkswagen is disputing the claim in Mumbai's high court, arguing that delays were due to inaction by tax officials. The customs department, however, asserts that Volkswagen withheld information, prolonging the investigation. This case highlights broader concerns regarding India's retrospective taxation practices and could influence the country's appeal to multinational investors.

India Plans to Abolish Digital Ad Tax to Ease U.S. Trade Tensions

In an effort to reduce trade tensions and advance a trade agreement with the United States, India plans to abolish a contentious 6% tax on digital advertisements that has significantly affected U.S. tech companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon. The proposed removal of the tax will be included in amendments to the Finance Bill 2025, expected to pass in parliament this week, making it effective from April 1. The United States has previously criticized the digital tax as discriminatory, as it primarily targeted foreign companies while exempting domestic ones. This move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the U.S., where both nations agreed to work towards expanding trade significantly by 2030. The planned removal of the tax aims to provide relief to U.S. tech firms and ease trade concerns, as ongoing discussions continue between U.S. and Indian officials.

The committee aims to update the 17-year-old regulations and increase disclosures from SEBI members. Additionally, SEBI approved raising the asset threshold for foreign portfolio investors requiring granular disclosures to 500 billion rupees ($5.84 billion). The regulator also introduced stricter rules for senior positions at market institutions, mandating governing body approval for major roles and prescribing cooling-off periods for key posts before joining a competitor.
