There is an overall push toward improving education outcomes more aligned with life in the 21st century. Over the last decade, significant progress has been made to improve access to education and rates of school enrollment at all levels, especially for girls. More children and adolescents are now enrolled in preschool, elementary, and secondary education than in the past.
Yet, for many of them, school does not result in learning -- and that was before COVID-19 shut down schools around the world and upended learning, creating the urgency of a new vision for education. Poverty remains one of the most stubborn barriers, with children in poor families nearly five times as likely as children in wealthy families to not attend primary school.
