How your favorite tea-time snack healthier than rusk bread? Find out the shocking answer?

Is your teatime incomplete without munching on delicious and crunchy rusks? Although they are staples, health experts say eating rusks made from breads high in carbs, sugar and oil is unhealthy and can only lead to high cholesterol, blood pressure and weight gain. Rusks are higher in calories than bread. Read on to learn how you can make them even more nutritious.

Also, people prefer rusks more than biscuits because they are healthier and contain fewer calories. Because they are made mostly of wheat and semolina, which have a low glycemic index, people think they are good for diabetics as well.

Rusks are also often used instead of bread, which is considered unhealthy because it is made from refined flour and oil. However, the truth is different.

According to food experts and nutritionists, rusks are mostly made with four loaves, so you won't be consuming fewer calories or eating healthier than you think.

Rusks also contain more calories than bread, at 407 kcal per 100 grams. A loaf of white bread contains 258-281 kcal, while a loaf of wheat contains 232-250 kcal.

Disadvantages of eating rusks

Following are the disadvantages of consuming rusks along with your tea:

They are made from stale bread

According to Medium, the main ingredients used in making rusk are flour, sugar, yeast and oil, but most of the rusk available in the markets uses stale bread.

Powdery mildew, a toxic substance, can cause many digestive problems, including diarrhea and constipation.

It causes many allergies or skin, which makes it itchy, swollen, patchy and even dry.

Made with unhealthy oil

The medium says that the most common oil used in making rusk is in the form of ghee or margarine, which solidifies at human body temperature.

Its chronic use can cause blood clots in blood vessels and heart attacks.

 Rusk is loaded with sugar

A large amount of white sugar is used in baking and bakery products, which enhances the taste of the dish. Constant intake of sugar is dangerous to health and increases the risk of various diseases.

May contain anti-nutrients

According to Healthline, both bread and rusks are made with grains that typically contain anti-nutrients, compounds that prevent your body from absorbing certain minerals. Grains contain high amounts of  acid, a type of molecule that binds to iron, zinc, magnesium, and calcium and prevents their absorption.

Contains gluten

Because rusks are made of bread, they are heavy with gluten, a specific type of protein that helps dough rise and gives it its elastic texture. Generally, people digest gluten easily, however, some cannot tolerate it at all. Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which gluten damages the lining of your small intestine and impairs nutrient absorption, is very common in many people.

Also, many people have a sensitivity to gluten, which can cause problems like bloating, diarrhea and stomach pain.

Carbohydrates are high

Both bread and rusks are made with refined flour and are so high in carbohydrates that eating too much can increase body weight, blood sugar levels, cholesterol and metabolic syndrome -- a group of health conditions that increase the risk of heart disease.
