HOW YOU ARE MORE FORTUNATE IF YOU WERE BORN IN THE LATE 1990s

Youth Today is an established and respected independent, nonpartisan, internationally distributed digital media publication that is read by thousands of professionals in the youth service field.

If you were born between 1997-2012 you will refer to Generation Z, you are the up agers, with influence beyond your years. You are the tweens the teens the youth and young adults of this Geological Age, time of economic and social renewal make you an early adopter, the brand influencer, the social media drivers, the pop-culture leaders. You don’t just represent the global future, you are creating it. You were born into the crisis period of terrorism, global recessions and climate change. You are the students of today and university graduates, employees and consumers of tomorrow.

YOU ARE MORE COMMUNICATIVE

Chats via Slack, quick check-ins over email and even a simple emoji count as the kind of communication for you. You feel you need several times per day to have connected to your team and supported in your work. Frequent feedback doesn’t have to mean lengthy one on ones every day; rather, managers can shoot a quick text to check-in or redefine a project, leave the door open for meetings as needed, and trust their Gen Z employees to do their work

YOU ARE MORE DEPENDENT ON TECHNOLOGY

The difference between technology dependence vs. technology fluency has an impact. You are significantly more dependent on technology, while older people would be considered technology fluent. For you, technological dependence is not necessarily considered to be an addiction, but rather that you view your mobile devices as “extensions” of yourself. You can even feel anxiety without it.

SLEEPLESSNESS IS MORE COMMON AMONG YOU

You use your technologies to the extent that their use causes you to lose sleep, but that would appear to “come with the territory.”

WHEN DID YOU GET YOUR FIRST SMARTPHONE?

The average Gen Z got their first smartphone just before their twelfth birthday. They communicate primarily through social media and texts and spend as much time on their phones as older generations do watching television.

YOU ARE PROBABLY THE LAST GENERATION WHO DIDN’T SEE YOUR PARENTS ADDICTED TO SMARTPHONES IN YOUR CHILDHOOD

If you are a parent then you as a parent might be spending more time with your smartphones taxing, chatting and using social media as compared to the time you spend with your kids playing and having fun with them while your parents couldn’t use smartphones properly. It makes you the last generation more fortunate who had a lot of fun time with your parents.

YOU GREW UP IN THE DIGITAL ERA

You are much different from older generations because you are the first consumers to have grown up wholly in the digital era. You are tech-savvy and mobile-first—and you have high standards for how you spend your time online.
