A recent instance in Navi Mumbai emphasizes the risk of internet fraud, especially for people seeking work-from-home opportunities. According to news agency PTI, a 37-year-old pregnant woman from Airoli fell prey to a scam that cost her more than Rs 54 lakhs.
The woman, who was on maternity leave and looked for ways to earn extra income online, was drawn to the prospect of freelance employment. The fraudsters offered her a fairly simple task: rating companies and restaurants. They promised her a large sum after finishing five assignments.
The woman believed their promises and paid payments totaling Rs. 54,30,000 to several accounts between May 7 and 10. Despite performing the requirements, she was unable to contact the fraudsters, as all calls remained unanswered. This made her realize she had been cheated.
She reported the event to Navi Mumbai cyber police, who filed a case against four unnamed individuals under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology Act.
