The cheerful group of friends gave birth to the World Friendship Crusade as he sat down to supper with his pals in the village of Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay. It was envisioned as a foundation to foster friendship and fellowship among people of all genders, races, ethnicities, and religions.

The cartoon character Winnie the Pooh was then named the world's Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's wife Nane Annan in 1998.
