I preface this article with the belief that everyone is chemically sensitive, just that some of us have a more severe reaction than others. I believe it has nothing to do with the health of a person’s immune system. Keep in mind that I am not a medical professional, but I have completely cured my allergies and chemical sensitivities by using food as my medicine. All the information I share with you is from my experience. My story is on my website.
First, I must say that severe multiple chemical sensitivity is a temporary condition. I always thought it was eternal, and my life was like until I realized I could get better. I think allergies are usually incurable, but I've here to tell you that they are temporary.
In the meantime, there are ways to deal with it.
Get a good air purifier for your home with coconut shell carbon. Standard carbon is petroleum based and enhances chemical sensitivity. You can even get one for your car. Try not to drive in a hurry and avoid the tailpipes of other cars.
Remove toxins from your home. There are some that you can easily control, such as household cleaners and laundry detergent. It is as common as vinegar, soap or hydrogen peroxide. Do not forget the furniture polish too. Try not to use an aerosol spray that evaporates the solution.
Keep in mind the new items you bring into your home. I had an interesting experience with my new washing machine. I felt dizzy every time I used it and could see the smell of engine oil. I realized that the oil and plastic used in the interior would leak out due to the heat of the motor. I have to put my air purifier next to it to inhale the smoke, or I get dizzy by evening.
Use natural products on your body. Makeup, shampoo, deodorant, lotion, sanitary napkin, soap etc. Take unbleached toilet paper, tissues, paper towels. Traditional sanitary napkins and tampons are clogged with chemicals and pesticide residues. There are options for everything.
Clean your garage. If your garage is attached to your home, the smoke from all the toxic products stored there, including fuel, plastics and glue from your car, will penetrate into your home!
If you can, do some reconstruction. Carpets and padding should be natural. Traditional carpets and padding are never out-gas. No synthetic rug with stain treatment, wool and cotton are good. (If you can not rebuild and get an air purifier, even if you did.)
Plant plants in your home. They help filter out indoor air pollution. English Ivy, Beasley, Corn plant, Chinese Evergreen etc.
Be careful when buying new furniture with chemically coated and formaldehyde-containing fabrics on the particle board, not to mention specifically about toxic varnishes and stains. Go for used or finished pieces yourself. Buy non-toxic paint and do not leave it at home until it dries. At Eco Building Centers, you can find all the alternative paint / varnish / glue products for your home.
When you insulate your ceiling or walls, make sure the insulation is free of formaldehyde.
Place a filter on your shower to remove chemicals. You do not like to inhale the vapors in your shower or inhale them through your skin. Also filter your drinking water.
Is your heating system gas or electric? Natural gas can cause allergies.
Avoid pesticides inside or outside the home and away from excess herbicides. I read somewhere that there are more women with cancer in homes that use yard chemicals. Why take that chance? There are safer options.
Gas lawn mowers, leaf blowers, etc. cause more pollution than cars. Use push mower and electric walkers and your hands. This is a good exercise.
Try to stay away from shopping malls with clothes full of all chemicals and toxic construction materials and cleaners and perfume counters. Perfume is such a big culprit. Do not wear it and ask family and friends to leave it at home. Try not to lock it in space. All new clothes should be washed and rinsed with vinegar in water.
Avoid brand-new buildings or newly renovated ones using traditional paint, carpet and glue. In older buildings, they are still running out of gas, not so much.
Did you know that corrugated sheets and shirts are treated with chemicals to make them look identical? Some of those chemicals actually make it harder to fall asleep. Now that cotton is one of the most pesticide sprayed crops, try to buy organically.
Now you know that there are many ways to control chemicals in your environment. It may seem overwhelming, so change only one thing at a time. Before you know it, you may have built a safe home.
Remember, these sensitivities and allergies are temporary if you rebuild your immune system with nutrition.
