Dr. Manmohan Singh is a renowned Indian politician, economist, and academician who served as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan), Singh's family migrated to India during the partition in 1947. He completed his early education in Urdu medium and later studied economics at Panjab University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1952 and 1954, respectively .
Singh's academic excellence took him to the University of Cambridge, where he earned a First Class Honours degree in Economics in 1957. He further pursued his D.Phil. in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford University, in 1962. His doctoral thesis, "India's export performance, 1951-1960, export prospects and policy implications," was later published as a book, "India's Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth" .
Singh's professional career began as a teacher at Panjab University, followed by a stint at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from 1966 to 1969. He then served as a professor of international trade at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, from 1969 to 1971. Singh's expertise in economics led to his appointment as Chief Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance in 1972, and later as Secretary in the Finance Ministry in 1976 .
