The Concept of the First Mechanical Computer In 1822, Charles Babbage designed and developed the first mechanical computer, the Difference Engine. In 1822, Charles Babbage conceptualized and began developing the Difference Engine, which is believed to be the first automatic computing machine capable of approximating polynomials. Charles Babbage received some help developing the Difference Engine from Ada Lovelace, who is considered the first female computer programmer due to her work on the computer.
Charles Babbage began to share with Ada his ideas for a new machine, a machine that would overcome difference engines and was very similar in architecture to today's state-of-the-art computers, although it was also never completed (Kim & Toole, 1999). Although the Analytical Engine was never fully developed, the documented blueprints of machine capabilities became the basis of what we understand today as computer programming and our current machines.
The differential engine was intended to create mathematical tables, similar to the logging done by the human computers mentioned above, and to automate the steps required to calculate the data. It lacks many features found in today's computers; it is designed to perform a single specialist task and is not Turing complete.
The analytical engine included an ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit), basic flow control, punch cards (inspired by Jacquard's Loom) and integrated memory. The earliest computer that resembled modern machines was the Analytical Engine, a device invented and designed between 1833 and 1871 by the British mathematician Charles Babbage. His invention was different from any of these earlier creations and far more sophisticated: He engineered it to do almost any mathematical calculation.
The first mechanical computer was considered programmable, and Charles Babbage wrote notes and sketches on the Difference Engine as well. In 1910, Henry Babbage, the youngest son of Charles Babbage, was able to complete part of the first universal mechanical computer and perform some basic calculations.
The first modern computer concept In 1938, Alan Turing first proposed the Turing machine, which became the foundation of computation and computers. In 1945, Alan Turing joined the National Physical Laboratory and began working on the development of a stored-program electronic digital computer. The first concept of a stored program computer was introduced in 1948 with the introduction of the SS EM (Small Scale Experimental Machine), also known as the Manchester Baby or Babe. Between 1928 and 1931, Ha zen and Vannevar Bush built a differential analyzer that was truly practical in the sense that it could be used to solve a variety of problems, and thus can be considered the first computer by this criterion. Although a judge subsequently determined that the ABC computer was the first digital computer, many still believe that the EN IAC was the first digital computer because the EN IAC was fully functional. EN IAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), also known as Giant Brian (1945), was the first electronic, general-purpose digital computer.
One of the first and most famous, EN IAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Analyzer Computer), was built at the University of Pennsylvania for the United States Army's World War II ballistics calculations—and it was. The first computer to achieve Turing completion, and one with the four basic properties that characterize our computers today, was the EN IAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), which was secretly developed by the US military and was first put into operation at the University of Pennsylvania on 10.
