            HISTORY OF VALENTINE DAY

Valentine's Day, also called Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day celebration

Valentine's Day is a very popular holiday in our modern culture. We just love smelling flowers, eating chocolate, and sharing love notes.

 ROMAN TIMES:

Originating in ancient Roman times, the feast of Lupercalia was a pagan festival held on February 15. It involved the sacrifice of goats and dogs, actually included the men whipping the women with the hides from the sacrificed animals. It was believed that this act drove out any evil spirits preventing the fertility of the women. We get the red and white Valentine’s Day color

There was more than one man known as St. Valentine throughout history, but much of the glory of this holiday is given to St. Valentine, who was beheaded on February 14 about 278 AD. Roman Emperor Claudius the Cruel forbade marriage in order to build a strong army. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men were better soldiers than those with wives and families. So, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine was a priest who rejected the announcement and continued to marry. It was because of this contempt and his belief in the importance of love and marriage that he was arrested and beheaded.

It is also reported that while Valentine was in prison, he had been friends with the prisoner's daughter. He allegedly wrote her a letter from "From Your Valentine." That may have been the beginning of our modern Valentine's Day gift-sharing traditions from the blood and milk associated with Lupercalia.

 The emergence of Valentine's Day

Pope Celsius first declared February 14 as Valentine's Day in about 496 AD. However, it is believed that Chaucer's poem "The Parliament of Fouls" first established Valentine's Day as a holiday of love. This poem depicts a gathering of birds on Valentine's Day to choose their friends and soon, Europeans began sending love notes during the bird breeding season. Since then, countless poets and playwrights, including Shakespeare, have been promoting the romantic theme of February 14.

Hallmark began handing out their Valentine's Day cards in 1913,and now they produce more than 1,500 types of Valentine's. It is estimated that 114 million greeting cards will be exchanged, excluding Valentines' class from children.
